Apple’s November 4 announcement makes retention messages available during auto-renewable subscription cancellation. Messages can include text, images or offers; API access requires a request. 1

Bloomboff's take

A useful reminder can save a subscription somebody actually wants. A guilt trip can make them wish they had cancelled sooner. The difference is relevance, restraint and a visible way out.

Developers should treat this as a chance to explain value, not an excuse to turn leaving into a hostage negotiation with a discount code. Show the benefit, make the offer intelligible and let the answer be no. Nobody needs a damn loyalty obstacle course.

The interesting test is whether the pitch earns another month. Retention deserves that name only when staying feels like a choice.
