President Isaac Herzog will formally task Gadi Eisenkot with building Israel’s next government on Sunday, The Jerusalem Post reports. Bloomboff has not independently verified the presidential decision. According to the report, Herzog announced his choice on Saturday. 1

The report gives Eisenkot 28 days to find a governing agreement, with the president able to add up to 14 days. The outgoing cabinet stays in a caretaker role until its successor passes a Knesset confidence vote and assumes office. 1

In his own X post, Eisenkot called for a national emergency government. 2

Bloomboff's take

A mandate opens negotiations. It cannot conjure a bloody majority. The handshake makes a fine photo; the arithmetic still has to work.
