Binance says withdrawals are paused while security teams investigate the suspected hot-wallet incident. The exchange says they will resume once the issue is resolved and maintains that user funds are completely safe. Yi He also announced the suspension. No final loss figure or full incident report has been published. [4][8]

That leaves two separate questions: can Binance cover customers, and what actually left its control? The exchange's reassurance does not settle the second one. CZ, its former CEO and a shareholder, has said he expects user funds to be fully covered. [2]

Trackers' circulating estimates now put multi-chain outflows at roughly $5.5-5.8 billion. Those are unreconciled transfer estimates, not an established theft total. They may include internal movements or overlapping counts, and frozen assets are not a separate sum to add on top.

The reported Bitcoin component has widened to roughly 16,700-18,300 BTC, valued at around $1.3-1.45 billion at the time. Its connection to the Ethereum activity remains unresolved. Counting every transfer from a Binance-labelled wallet as money stolen would overstate what is known. [5]

The Ethereum activity centres on wallets labelled Binance 14, Binance 16 and Hot Wallet 34. Earlier on-chain checks showed a sweep call on the main wallet. [9] Analysts cited in the reporting describe a contract that swept ETH and dozens of tokens using EIP-7702 delegation.

In plain English, that mechanism lets a wallet delegate execution to contract code through an authorization signed by that wallet. The unresolved question is how the authorization was obtained. A compromised key or signing process is suspected; neither has been established as the final cause. The reported mechanism alone does not establish an Ethereum protocol flaw.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino says more than $1.567 billion in USDT has been frozen. Add the approximately $823 million in USDC cited by CZ and the reported Tether-Circle subtotal is about $2.39 billion, rounded to $2.4 billion. Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire previously confirmed more than $800 million frozen in coordination with law enforcement. [1][2][3]

Yi He also thanked Ripple and World Liberty Financial for freeze assistance. Those additional reports are outside that subtotal; a reconciled breakdown is still missing. A freeze restricts transfers. It does not establish a final loss or mean the money has been returned. BTC and ETH cannot be blocked through the same issuer blacklist mechanism. [8]

Bloomboff's take

The money is safe. The exit is closed. That is one hell of a fucking customer experience. Reassurance is welcome; a reconciled balance sheet and an explanation would be considerably sexier.

Update, 29 October 2026, 22:39 UTC: Added Tether's larger reported freeze, Binance's stronger reassurance and unresolved BTC transfers.

Update, 29 October 2026, 23:01 UTC: Added the reported withdrawal pause, larger tracker estimates and the suspected signing-authority mechanism. No final loss or root cause is confirmed.
